James W. Franklin Scholarship
2006-2007 Award Winner
Erika Baker

As presented by Ellison Franklin, President, May 24, 2007:

"Jim Franklin was not a diplomat or movie star; he was not a politician or professional athlete. He was simply a good man; a man who loved his family and was faithful to his friends. He never let anyone down and always looked for the best in everyone. His passing did not interrupt the evening news nor was it featured on the covers of tabloids. He wasn’t the subject of television specials or public tributes. Lesser men have had such acknowledgement. In our complex and challenging world where integrity is an endangered commodity, we need to remember the good men and so Jim’s children and I established this scholarship in his name so that the world would remember a good man.

The recipient of this year’s James W. Franklin Scholarship has outstanding interpersonal skills. The recipient has worked to help those who are less fortunate and recognizes the importance of being a contributing member of the community.

She is conscientious, responsible and respected by her peers. She is described as a young woman of integrity. She plans to attend Michigan State University and become a teacher. For all these reasons and more that were described in both her application and letters of recommendation, the 2007 James W. Franklin Scholarship Award is presented to: Erika Baker.
